Founded in the early 1900s by Shifu Jian Jin Shan (蕑金山師傅), Honan Shaolin Hui–河南少林會 was established in Shanghai to preserve and spread the teachings of a Shaolin lineage and its legacy, which had been passed down by both lay and monk masters for generations in the Luoyang region. During this time, traditional martial arts and values were viewed negatively by the "New Culture Movement (新文化運動)," which promoted modern, progressive, and western ideals while rejecting long-held traditional Chinese values such as lineage ties.
Sadly, on December 8th, 1941, the Honan Shaolin Hui 河南少林會 located in Shanghai's international section was invaded. The Japanese military killed Shifu Jian's elderly aunt, who was also the most experienced instructor at the academy. Shifu Jian himself was imprisoned and ultimately died tragically, believing that his efforts had been unsuccessful.
